Experience the timeless, inspiring and incomparably moving story of the Passion with this intensely dramatic telling of Christ’s betrayal, suffering and death.
Hamilton Civic Choir, in collaboration with St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra (SMCO) will perform Bach’s great masterwork, St Matthew Passion. Captivating audiences for over 250 years, this work is one of Bach’s most beautiful and most exciting. The St Matthew Passion tells the story of Jesus’ Passion, the events leading up to and including his crucifixion. Soloists, chorus, and orchestra narrate and reflect on the Last Supper, Jesus’ betrayal and arrest, the trial, crucifixion and burial. These events are portrayed as a gripping drama, one that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats from beginning to end, transfixed by the compelling narrative as well as the beautiful music.
The Hamilton Civic Choir last performed this great work in 1995 with St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra under conductor Uwe Grodd. This year, the choir will be collaborating with SMCO again under the baton of Musical Director Timothy Carpenter and will be joined by a cast of Bach specialists featuring Tenor Lachlan Craig as the Evangelist, Bass Baritone James Harrison as Christ, Soprano Jayne Tankersley and Mezzo Soprano Sarah Court, including soloists Yotam Levy on Cello, Chris Greenslade on Harpsichord, and Dr. Philip Smith on Organ.
The performance aims to create an overwhelming emotional experience. Come and live it with us!
