Celebrate 75 years of masterful music making, with a very special presentation…
Hamilton Civic Choir presents a grand celebratory concert to mark its 75th year of high-quality choral performance in the community. This spectacle will bring together Tron Songsters Children’s Choir and the All Hallows Chapel Choirs of Southwell School to first present a programme of shorter pieces such as Eriks Esenvalds’ “Stars” and New Zealand classic “Pokarekare Ana”. The second half will be a combined performance of Carl Orff’s epic “Carmina Burana” featuring all the choirs, two pianos, chamber percussion and international soloists – Soprano Natasha Wilson, Tenor Oliver Sewell and Baritone Christian Thurston.
Orff’s secular cantata is an Everest for any choir, a setting of 24 poems – a Hymn to ‘Fortune: Empress of the World’, pastoral scenes, comedic tavern songs, courtly love songs and romantic epics (in both Latin, ‘Middle High’ German and touches of ancient French) – all set to a unique blend of contemporary and ancient harmonic languages. This is the source of the well-known “O Fortuna”, found in many movie soundtracks from “Excalibur” to “G-Force”. Certainly a piece that will be loved by our avid audience here in Hamilton.
To cap it all off, we will be performing this incredible line up in a very special venue – more than worthy of the scale of the music – Hamilton’s very own Clarence Street Theatre. All in all, this will be a spectacular celebration of music that you will not want to miss!
