2023 Season: Around the World in Song

Hamilton Civic Choir presents “Around in the World in Song” in two concerts on Saturday, 25th March 2023, and will pilot audiences through islands and continents singing international songs at each pit stop.

“This 2023 concert season of “New Horizons” explores rich and diverse music of different cultures,” says Music Director Elise Bradley, “and what better way to celebrate the mighty Waikato’s rich multicultural diversity and inclusivity by showcasing eclectic and colourful music from around the world through song and dance.”

In their first leg, the choir accompanied by pianist Chris Greenslade, will sing A Te Tarakihi by New Zealand composer Brent Stewart, and will also feature songs from New Zealand, the Torres Strait, and Malaysia, with a pit stop in the Arabian peninsula where we will hear Jordanian composer Shireen Abu-Khader’s Lammaa Baadaa Yathathanna. The next leg sees the choir travelling across the European continent to Italy where we will hear well-known song Funiculi, Funicula by Luigi Denza, to France and the United Kingdom, and cross the Atlantic Ocean to Canada where will hear Song for the Mira by Allister MacGillivray for baritone and oboe. The final leg sees the choir travelling across the North American continent to Mexico where we will hear La Cucaracha (The Cockroach), before finishing in the Samoan Islands to sing Tagaloa composed by Elisha Hulton and accompanied by log drums.

Hamilton Civic Choir is also hosting silent auctions at each of the concerts, to fundraise for their musical endeavours in performance and educating young musicians of Waikato – for more details follow us on Facebook.
