PROGRAMME NOTES
Jauchzet, Frohlocket! from the Christmas Oratorio – J.S. Bach (1685-1750)
Christmas Oratorio Part 1, I: Chorus Jauchzet, frohlocket J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Early Christmas morning in 1734, Bachโs triumphant setting of the words โJauchzet frohlocketโ rang out for the first time at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The Christmas Oratorio is in fact six oratorios in one, each devoted to a different feast day at Christmas, and it retells the story of the Nativity. The first of these oratorios is for Christmas Day itself, of which this number is the opening chorus. The words โShout for joy, exult!โ mark the end of the penitential season of Advent and the dawn of a season of triumph and celebration
Mary, Mother – Bob Chilcott (b.1955)
This sequence of six carols explores the role of Mary in the Christmas story, focussing on her human experience within a story of the divine. The writer Georgia Way places the sycamore tree as a central image: from reflecting instability in Mary’s emerging adulthood to symbolizing the regenerative power of the human spirit in the work’s closing movement. Chilcott’s music perfectly depicts the narrative, musically charting Mary’s emotional journey through poignant melodies, rich harmonies, and characterful instrumental textures.
And the Glory of the Lord from The Messiah – G.F. Hรคndel (1685-1759)
Georg Friedrich Hรคndel, born in Halle, Germany, in 1685, spent his early years there. After a few years in Italy, he travelled to London in 1711, where he lived and worked for most of his life.
From 1741, Handelโs focus was on oratorios and concert works. An oratorio is an extended musical setting of a sacred text for soloists, ensembles, and chorus. While typically performed in concert settings, oratorios incorporate dramatic, narrative, and contemplative elements. Antony Hicks in Grove Online noted that Handel found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre he invented and established.
Handelโs oratorios follow the three-act Italian opera tradition. Writing 29 oratorios, the Messiah, was composed in just 24 days from August 22, 1741, had its first performance in Dublin on April 13, 1742. It received its London premiere the following year.
โAnd the Glory of the Lordโ is the chorus at the end of Scene 1- Isaiahโs Prophecy of Salvation, โฏdescribing God’s ultimate plan to provide a Redeemer, often referred to as the Messiah, who will be a descendant of David, bring justice, and lead people to reconciliation and peace by paying the penalty for their sins. These prophecies span God’s judgment for sin, the coming virgin birth of the Savior, his future sacrificial death, his return, and the eventual full restoration of all things, extending God’s salvation to all people, not just the Israelites.
O Nata Lux – David N. Childs (b. 1969)
David Childs, a New Zealandโborn composer now based in the United States, is widely admired for his elegant and expressive choral works. His setting of O Nata Luxโa Latin hymn for the Feast of the Transfigurationโcaptures the radiant simplicity of the ancient text, which praises Christ as the “light born of light.”
Childsโ music is characterized by luminous harmony and a flowing, chant-like melodic line. The texture gradually unfolds, creating a sense of stillness and reverence that reflects the textโs imagery of divine light and mercy. In its restraint and clarity, O Nata Lux offers a moment of quiet transcendence within any programme.
In the Bleak Midwinter – Dan Forrest (b.1978)
American composer Dan Forrest is known for his lush, lyrical choral writing that combines emotional depth with rich harmonic color. His setting of Christina Rossettiโs beloved poem In the Bleak Midwinter (first published in 1872 and famously set by Gustav Holst and Harold Darke) brings a fresh, contemporary voice to the text while honouring its timeless message.
Forrestโs SSAA version begins with a sense of quiet intimacy, gradually blossoming into soaring lines and radiant harmonies that reflect both the fragility and the majesty of the nativity story. The music balances tenderness with grandeur, culminating in a heartfelt expression of devotion that mirrors Rossettiโs closing image of offering oneโs heart.
Mi Burrito Sabanero – Cristian Grases (b.1973)
Mi Burrito Sabanero (โMy Little Donkey from the Savannahโ) is one of the most beloved Christmas songs from Venezuela, written in 1972 by Hugo Blanco. Sung from the perspective of a child riding a donkey on the way to Bethlehem, it has become a joyful part of Latin American Christmas celebrations, known for its catchy melody and irresistible rhythm.
Cristian Grases, a Venezuelan-born conductor and composer now based in the United States, has crafted a vibrant choral arrangement that preserves the songโs infectious energy while adding rich textures and playful rhythmic interplay. His setting invites the choir to capture the spirit of movement and delight, making this piece as fun to perform as it is to hear.
The result is a lively celebration that brings a distinctly Latin American flavour to the Christmas season โ a reminder of the joy, colour, and cultural diversity of global Christmas traditions.
Angels’ Carol – John Rutter (b.1945)
Few contemporary composers have shaped modern Christmas choral music as profoundly as John Rutter. Written in 1983, Angelsโ Carol has quickly become one of his most cherished seasonal works. The text, also by Rutter, celebrates the nativity with images of angels singing and the birth of Christ bringing joy to the world.
The music sparkles with his characteristic melodic warmth and flowing lyricism. A gentle rocking rhythm and bright, bell-like motifs give the piece an uplifting quality, perfectly capturing the sense of wonder and celebration at the heart of the Christmas story. Like much of Rutterโs music, Angelsโ Carol combines accessibility with elegance, making it a festive favourite for choirs and audiences alike.

HCC Tenor Scholarship

Iele Ieremia is a 22-year-old tenor, originally from Auckland and proudly of Samoan heritage, where his love for music and singing first grew in the church. Classically trained in piano and skilled in jazz saxophone, he developed a passion for choral singing at One Tree Hill College under the esteemed direction of Terence Maskell, where the menโs chorale earned silver awards at The Big Sing Finale, and he also served as Head Chorister. After school, his focus shifted towards studying for his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, with music taking a quieter role but continued to support several choirs as an instrumentalist. Now based in Waikato as the Hamilton Civic Choirโs tenor scholar, Iele is thrilled to reignite his passion for singing under the inspiring leadership of Elise Bradley and alongside the civic choirโs warm and welcoming community.
