PROGRAMME NOTES
This concert takes us around the world, starting in the USA and ending in New Zealand.

USA
Sure on this Shining Night – Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943)
This piece is a radiant setting of a poem by James Agee, capturing the quiet awe and gentle melancholy of a summer evening. Originally composed as part of Lauridsenโs Nocturnes cycle, the piece blends lush harmonies and lyrical phrasing to evoke both emotional intimacy and expansive wonder. With its tender dynamics and shimmering textures, the work invites listeners into a reflective space, where beauty and longing gently intertwine. It has become a cherished selection in the choral repertoire, celebrated for its expressive depth and serene elegance.
CANADA
Salutation of the Dawn – Eleanor Daley (b. 1955)
This piece sets an ancient Sanskrit text to music with luminous clarity and reverence. Drawing on the poetic wisdom of the poemโโLook to this day! For it is life, the very life of lifeโโDaley crafts a choral meditation that celebrates the present moment as sacred and fleeting. Her setting is marked by graceful melodic lines and gentle harmonic movement, creating an atmosphere of calm uplift. Through its quiet strength and serene beauty, the piece becomes both a musical benediction and a timeless reminder to cherish the gift of each new day.
Last Night of Stars – Don MacDonald (b. 1966)
This piece is a poignant and expressive work that reflects on love, memory, and farewell. With its soaring melodies and rich harmonic textures, the piece captures the emotional depth of its anonymous text, which speaks of enduring connection even as parting looms. MacDonaldโs setting balances tender lyricism with dramatic intensity, allowing choirs to explore a wide dynamic and emotional range. The result is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on the transience of life and the luminous imprint of love that remains.
NORWAY
His Light in Us – Kim Andrรฉ Arnesen (b. 1980)
This work is a stirring anthem of hope and spiritual radiance, composed for the St. Olaf Choirโs 2016 Christmas tour. With text by Euan Tait, the piece conveys a message of divine light shining within and through humanity, even in times of darkness. Arnesenโs luminous harmonies, soaring lines, and cinematic crescendos create a sense of uplift and renewal, making the work both emotionally resonant and deeply contemplative. Rooted in a tradition of Nordic choral warmth and modern expression, this piece offers a moving reflection on faith, purpose, and inner illumination.
SWITZERLAND
Ave Maris Stella – Ivo Antognini (b. 1963)
This piece is a luminous setting of the ancient Marian hymn that honours Mary as the guiding โStar of the Sea.โ Characterised by rich, flowing harmonies and expressive melodic lines, Antogniniโs interpretation evokes both serenity and devotion. The composition unfolds with a sense of reverence and tenderness, offering moments of calm reflection interspersed with dynamic swells that mirror the oceanic imagery of the text. Balancing tradition with contemporary choral colour, this piece invites listeners into a sacred soundscape of grace and awe. [text translation]

Hoja Ke Nonyana (โIf I Were a Birdโ) is a lyrical and expressive isiXhosa song that weaves tender longing with soaring melodic imagery. As one of South Africaโs pioneering indigenous composers, Moerane brings together indigenous language, folk-inspired rhythms, and Western harmonic traditions to create music of poignant depth. This piece evokes the wistful yearning to escape grief or hardship by imagining the freedom of flightโits gentle lines and heartfelt phrasing offering both consolation and uplift. Rich in cultural resonance and emotional nuance, Hoja Ke Nonyana is a luminous example of Moeraneโs gift for uniting personal sentiment with national voice. Repetitions in the text reiterate the importance of nurturing new life. [text translation]
AUSTRALIA
Festive Alleluia – Lyn Williams (b. 1963)
Lyn Williams is Australiaโs leading director of choirs for young people. Her composition Festive Alleluia is a vibrant and rhythmically energised work that captures the spirit of celebration through layered textures and dynamic interplay. Composed by one of Australiaโs leading choral educators and conductors, the piece showcases Williamsโ flair for writing music that is both accessible and artistically compelling. Bursting with rhythmic vitality, shifting meters, and a joyful sense of momentum, Festive Alleluia is a jubilant affirmation of voice and community, inviting singers and audiences alike into its spirited musical exclamation.
NEW ZEALAND
Dance-Song to the Creator – David Hamilton (b. 1955)
Dance-Song to the Creator bursts with jubilant energy, weaving together vibrant rhythmic patterns and soaring melodic lines in a compelling affirmation of praise. Inspired by texts drawn from Psalm 149 and a 15th-century Indian song, and shaped by Hamiltonโs signature lyricism, the work invites both singers and listeners into a communal celebration of divine creativity. Its shifting metres and energetic motifs evoke a sense of spirited movementโalmost a choreographed expression of joyโwhile the dynamic contrasts and layered textures give the music depth and vitality. The result is an exuberant and uplifting choral work that bridges sacred devotion with artistic exuberance.
All songs performed by the Young Women’s Chorus of San Francisco will be described in-person by the director at their discretion.

TEXT TRANSLATIONS
Ave Maris Stella
Ave maris stella,
Dei Mater alma,
Atque semper Virgo,
Felix caeli porta.
Hail, bright star of ocean,
God’s own Mother blest,
Ever sinless Virgin,
Gate of heavenly rest.
Sumens illud Ave
Gabrielis ore,
Funda nos in pace,
Mutans Hevae nomen.
Taking that sweet Ave
Which from Gabriel came,
Peace confirm within us,
Changing Eva’s name.
Solve vincla reis,
Profer lumen caecis:
Mala nostra Pelle,
Bona cuncta posce.
Break the captives’ fetters,
Light on blindness pour,
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.
Monstra te esse matrem:
Sumat per te preces,
Qui pro nobis natus,
Tulit esse tuus.
Show thyself a Mother;
May the Word Divine,
Born for us thy Infant,
Hear our prayers through thine.
Virgo singularis,
Inter omnes mitis,
Nos culpis solutos,
Mites fac et castos.
Virgin all excelling,
Mildest of the mild,
Freed from guilt, preserve us,
Pure and undefiled.
Vitam praesta puram,
Iter para tutum:
Ut videntes Jesum,
Semper collaetemur.
Keep our life all spotless,
Make our way secure,
Till we find in Jesus,
Joy forevermore.
Sit laus Deo Patri,
Summo Christo decus,
Spiritui Sancto,
Tribus honor unus.
Amen
Through the highest heaven
To the Almighty Three,
Father, Son and Spirit,
One same glory be.
Amen
Hoja Ke Nonyana
Hoja ke nonyana nkabe ke fofela hole,
hole, hole, hole, hole, holima, hole mลo
ke bonelang lefatลกe tlase.
If I were a bird I would be flying far away,
far, far away, high up in the sky, so high,
I could see the earth way below me.
Ke ne ke tla fofela mose ho maoatle
‘Me letsatsi ha le ea malikelo,
Maru a fetohile eka mali
ke fofe ka mora’, ka mora’ lona,
Ke hloelise ho bona mลo le entseng sehlaha teng,
I would fly across the seas,
And when the sun set,
While the clouds were turning as red as blood
I would fly behind it, on the other side,
To look and see where it makes its nest,
Ke fofe ho bona ho bona
moo tsatsi le entseng sehlaha teng.
I would fly in order to see
where the sun makes its nest.
