PROGRAMME NOTES
Cantate Domino – Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
Claudio Monteverdi’s “Cantate Domino” is a radiant and uplifting motet that exemplifies the composer’s innovative approach to sacred music during the early Baroque period. This piece is characterized by its joyful and exuberant proclamation of praise, as reflected in the text “Sing to the Lord a new song.” Monteverdi’s skillful use of vocal interplay and harmonic richness creates a vibrant tapestry of sound that captures the spirit of celebration and devotion. The motet’s dynamic contrasts and expressive melodies showcase Monteverdi’s ability to blend traditional polyphonic techniques with the emerging Baroque style, making “Cantate Domino” a timeless and inspiring work. Die Himmel erzรคhlen die Ehre Gottes from The Creation (Hob. XXI:2) – Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
“Die Himmel erzรคhlen die Ehre Gottes” from Franz Joseph Haydn’s oratorio “The Creation” (Hob. XXI:2) is a majestic and uplifting chorus that celebrates the glory of God’s creation. Based on Psalm 19, this movement opens Part I of the oratorio with a powerful proclamation of divine magnificence, as the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork. Haydn’s masterful use of choral and orchestral forces creates a vivid and awe-inspiring soundscape, reflecting the grandeur and order of the universe. The dynamic contrasts and intricate harmonies in this piece exemplify Haydn’s ability to convey profound spiritual themes through his music, making it a highlight of the oratorio. [text translation]
Geistliches Lied – Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Johannes Brahms’ “Geistliches Lied” (Op. 30), composed in 1856, is a serene and contemplative choral work set to a text by Paul Flemming. This piece, written for four-part mixed chorus and organ, is notable for its intricate double canon structure, showcasing Brahms’ mastery of counterpoint. The text, which speaks of trust in God’s will and the acceptance of fate, is beautifully complemented by Brahms’ rich harmonies and flowing melodic lines. The work’s reflective character and the final, resounding “Amen” create a profound sense of peace and spiritual solace, making “Geistliches Lied” a timeless gem in the choral repertoire. [text translation]
Kyrie Eleison from The Nelson Mass – Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
The “Kyrie Eleison” movement from Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Nelson Mass” (Missa in Angustiis) opens with dramatic intensity in D minor, featuring foreboding fanfares (originally set on the trumpet) and powerful choral cries of “Lord, have mercy.” This movement sets a solemn and urgent tone, reflecting the turbulent times during which Haydn composed the mass. The music transitions to a brighter F major at “Christe Eleison.” Haydn’s masterful use of dynamic contrasts and expressive melodies in this movement exemplifies his ability to convey deep emotional and spiritual themes through his music. Kyrie Eleison translates to ‘Lord have mercy’.
Cantate Gloria – Alan Bullard (b.1947)
Alan Bullard’s “Cantate Gloria,” composed in 1999, is a majestic and festive anthem for SATB choir. The piece begins with an insistent, syncopated rhythm in the tenors and basses, creating a lively and engaging foundation. This is followed by a vigorous imitative section involving all four voices, showcasing Bullard’s skillful use of vocal interplay. The opening rhythmic pattern returns to bring the anthem to a triumphant close. Cantate Gloria translates to “Sing Glory”.
Gloria, 1st movement from Gloria in D Major – Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
A shrewd musical entrepreneur, Antonio Vivaldi was a violin virtuoso, a teacher of music, and a versatile composer who wrote concerti, opera and everything in between. He was also a priest, which earned him the nickname, โThe Red Priestโ, referring also to his hair.
Many of Vivaldiโs works were lost for a century after his death. Then, a collection was discovered in an unopened cabinet behind a cathedral organ in Dresden. In 1926, a further collection was discovered in an Italian monastery. It was this latter collection which gave us the now-famous ‘Gloriaโ (RV589).
The first movement, titled “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” bursts forth with exuberant energy and joy. This opening chorus sets the tone for the entire work with its lively rhythms, bright orchestration, and jubilant choral writing. The movement features a spirited interplay between the orchestra and choir, creating a sense of celebration and divine praise. Vivaldi’s use of contrasting dynamics and textures adds to the movement’s vibrant character, making it an uplifting and memorable introduction to this beloved Baroque masterpiece.
A Hymn to the Virgin – Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)
Benjamin Britten’s “A Hymn to the Virgin,” composed in 1930 when Britten was just 16 years old, is a poignant and beautiful macaronic carol that blends Latin and English texts. This unaccompanied choral work, one of Britten’s earliest surviving pieces of church music, showcases his remarkable talent for creating evocative and expressive vocal lines. The hymn’s serene and contemplative character, coupled with its intricate harmonies, reflects Britten’s deep reverence for the Virgin Mary and his ability to convey profound spiritual themes through music.
O Fortuna from Carmina Burana – Carl Orff (1895-1982)
“O Fortuna,” the opening movement of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” is one of the most iconic and powerful pieces in the choral repertoire. Composed in 1935-36, this dramatic and intense chorus captures the capricious nature of fate, as depicted in the medieval Latin text. The music’s relentless rhythm, thunderous percussion, and soaring vocal lines create a sense of urgency and foreboding, reflecting the unpredictable and often cruel twists of fortune. Orff’s masterful orchestration and dynamic contrasts make “O Fortuna” a thrilling and unforgettable experience, resonating with audiences through its elemental power and emotional depth. [text translation]
Gloria from The Coronation Mass – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
The “Gloria” from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Coronation Mass” (K. 317) is a jubilant and rich movement that exemplifies the celebratory nature of this mass. Composed in 1779 for the Easter Day service at Salzburg Cathedral, the original orchestration for “Gloria” features bright, festive instrumentation, including trumpets and timpani, which add to its majestic character. The movement is marked by its lively rhythms and dynamic contrasts, with the choir and accompanists engaging in a spirited dialogue that conveys a sense of exaltation and divine praise. Mozart’s masterful blending of lyrical melodies and intricate counterpoint in this movement highlights his exceptional skill in creating music that is both deeply expressive and structurally sophisticated. [text translation]
Bridal Chorus, Opera Chorus from Lohengrin – Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Richard Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus,” from his 1850 opera “Lohengrin,” is one of the most iconic and widely recognized pieces of music associated with weddings. Often referred to as “Here Comes the Bride,” this chorus is sung by the women of the bridal party as they accompany Elsa to the wedding chapel. The music’s serene and majestic character, with its flowing melodies and rich harmonies, perfectly captures the joy and solemnity of the occasion. Wagner’s masterful orchestration and the chorus’s lyrical beauty have made the “Bridal Chorus” a timeless favorite for wedding ceremonies around the world. [text translation]
Cantus Gloriosus – Jรณsef ลwider (1930-2014)
Jรณsef ลwider’s “Cantus Gloriosus” is a vibrant and uplifting choral work that showcases the composer’s skillful use of harmony and texture. Written for SATB choir, this piece is characterized by its dynamic contrasts and rhythmic vitality, creating a sense of joyous celebration. The interplay between the vocal lines and the rich harmonic language reflects ลwider’s deep understanding of choral writing, making “Cantus Gloriosus” a compelling and engaging addition to the choral repertoire. [text translation]
All songs performed by Choralation will be described in-person by the director at their discretion

Geistliches Lied
Laร dich nur nichts nicht dauren mit Trauren,
sei stille, wie Gott es fรผgt,
so sei vergnรผgt mein Wille!
Let nothing keep you in affliction,
be at peace, as God has ordained,
so shall joyfully be my will!
Was willst du heute sorgen auf Morgen?
Der Eine steht allem fรผr,
der gibt auch dir das Deine.
Why be concerned today about tomorrow?
The One takes care of all;
he also gives you your due.
Sei nur in allem Handel ohn Wandel,
steh feste, was Gott beschleuรt,
das ist und heiรt das Beste.
In all your affairs be unchanged,
hold fast, what God decides,
is and means the best.
Amen.
Amen.
O Fortuna, from Carmina Burana
O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.
O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
ever waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
playing with mental clarity;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.
Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.
Fate โ monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
devoid of security
and ever fading to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.
Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
sine mora
corde pulsum tangite;
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite
Fate, in health
and virtue
is against me,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong,
everyone weep with me!
Gloria, from the Coronation Mass
Gloria in excelsis Deo,
Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Glory to God in the highest,
And peace on earth to men of good will.
Laudamus te, benedicimus te,
Adoramus te, glorificamus te.
We praise you, we bless you,

Domine Deus, Rex coelestis,
Deus Pater omnipotens.
Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe.
Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris.
Lord God, King of Heaven,
God the Father Almighty.
Lord only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Qui tollis peccata mundi,
Suscipe deprecationem nostram.
Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris,

You who take away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.
You who take away the sin of the world,
Hear our prayer.
You who sit at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus,
